Witness chases down, traps suspect in fatal Fox Lake DUI accident

A witness to a car crash that killed a person near Fox Lake Thursday evening followed the drunken driver who police say caused the crash, eventually trapping her at a nearby campground, authorities said.

The witness called police while he was following the suspect and led them to the where they had stopped, Lake County sheriff's police Sgt. Rick White said.

The suspect was arrested after being treated at a suburban hospital.

"It worked out well," White said.

Dana M. Cameron, 34, of 180 S. Ela Road in Barrington, was charged with felony driving under the influence causing death. She also was charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

The crash left one person dead and another badly injured. Neither victim's name was released by police, nor was the name of a passenger in Cameron's car released.

The accident happened shortly before 5 p.m. on Route 12 south of Molidor Road.

Cameron was weaving in and out of traffic as she headed south on Route 12 in a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, police said.

The Cavalier sideswiped another southbound car, a 2004 Chrysler Sebring, sending it careening into the northbound lanes, police said.

The Sebring then was struck by a northbound 2006 Cadillac. Both cars came to rest on the northbound side of Route 12, blocking traffic.

Cameron kept driving after the crash but was followed by a witness in another vehicle, White said. The witness followed Cameron to the YMCA Camp Duncan grounds, where he pinned in Cameron's car and waited for police, White said.

The 50-year-old man driving the Sebring died on the scene, authorities said.

The 56-year-old Ingleside woman driving the Cadillac was flown by emergency helicopter to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

Cameron and her passenger, a 30-year-old Fox River Grove woman, both were taken to Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry with minor injuries. Both were treated and released. Police then arrested Cameron, White said.

Route 12 was shut down for several hours after the crash. Traffic on nearby roads, including Route 120, also was affected.
