Money for accessible parks

The DuPage Community Foundation has been awarded a $426,000 matching grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation to help two area park districts use innovative methods to become more handicapped-accessible. Knolls Park in Lombard will have a new accessible fishing station, bags and bocce courts. In Woodridge, 75th Street Park will have a sensory garden. Both parks will be equipped with rubberized surfaces and inclined surfaces for wheelchairs. Officials plan to break ground on the projects by spring next year and complete them by next fall. Of the total DuPage grant, $134,000 is earmarked for an endowment that will fund future efforts to make parks handicapped-accessible.
