Baseball

Travel tryout: The Melrose Indians will start three new travel teams in 2008 for 11-year-olds, 12-year-olds and 13-year-olds. An open tryout will be from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Black Hawk Park in Des Plaines (corner of Golf and Mount Prospect roads).

Each team will take part in both in- and out-of-state tournaments. Year-round training and development will be a main focus. The teams are trained by non-parent, experienced coaches.

Swimming

Junior Olympics: Swimmers from CASH Aquatics participated in the AAU National Junior Olympic Games held in Knoxville, Tenn. The CASH Aquatics Senior Boys 400 Meter Freestyle Relay of Brendan Connolly, Blaine Grzegorek, Chris Emery and Michael McGuire (all of Conant High School) not only smashed CASH Aquatics Swim team's record but outswam the Jefferson City, Mo., team to become the 2007 National Champions in that event. They also outswam the Jefferson team in the 400 Meter Medley Relay by 22 seconds for first place, almost by one full length of the 50 meter pool, but were disqualified on a technicality.

The AAU Junior Olympic Games is the largest, national, multi-sports event for youth in the country. Over 15,000 athletes compete in over 22 sports. CASH Aquatics Swim Team earned 45 medals and 25 ribbons at the XLI Annual AAU National Junior Olympic Games. Sixteen CASH Aquatics Swim team members participated in these National Championships.

The 15 to 18 girls 400 Meter Medley Relay team of Amanda Creevy, Andrea Curry, Nicole Mundie (all from Schaumburg High School) and Nathali Niedorowski (Conant High School) took second place behind the Bluewater Barracuda Swim Team from Fort Walton Beach, Fla., but were also disqualified. Swimming in a different order the same girls took third place in the 400 Meter Free Relay.

In the 15 to 18 Girls 200 Meter Free Relay, Ashley Wulf, Katie Cavanaugh, Creevy and Mundie (Schaumburg High School) placed third but were disqualified. In the 200 Meter Medley Relay, the team of Creevy, Curry, Mundie and Niedorowski finished fourth place setting a new team record.

Two Schaumburg brothers made up the 10 and Under age group. Dirgham Nubani (10) placed 26th in the 50 Free, 24th in 50 Back, 15th in the 100 Back, 12th in the 50 Breast (ribbon), 20th in the 100 Free and 6th place in the 200 Mixed Free Relay.

Uweis Nubani (9) placed 12th in the 50 Butterfly, 18th in the 50 Free, 14th in the 50 Back, 10th in the 50 Breast, 7th in the 100 Free and 5th in the mixed 200 Free Relay.

Natasha Alley (Schaumburg), the only 11 and 12 girl, finished 38th in the 50 Free, 26th in the 50 Back, 6th place in the 400 Meter Mixed Freestyle Relay and 5th place in the 200 Meter Mixed Free Relay.

Piotr Groszek (Hoffman Estates), the only 11 and 12 boy, finished 10th in the 50 Fly, 12th in the 50 Free, 10th in the 50 Back, 3rd place in the 400 Meter Mixed Free Relay and 5th place in the 200 Meter Mixed Free Relay.

Cavanaugh took 17th place in the 200 Free, 46th in the 50 Free, 23rd in the 100 Back, 37th in the 100 Free, and 9th in the 400 Meter Mixed Free Relay.

Nicole Clearfield of Schaumburg High School was 45th in the 50 Free, 18th in the 200 IM, 33rd in the 100 Free and 2nd in the 200 Meter Free Mixed Relay,

Creevy was 30th in the 50 Free, 27th in the 100 Back, and 28th in the 100 Free.

Curry placed 14th in the 200 Free, 29th in the 50 Free, 18th in the 100 Back, 9th in the 200 Back, 25th in the 100 Breast, 24th in the 100 Free and 3rd 200 Meter Mixed Free Relay.

Mundie was 9th in the 200 Free, 9th in the 100 Fly, 5th in the 50 Free, 16th in the 100 Breast, and 8th in the 100 Free.

Niedorowski placed 16th in the 200 Free, 19th in the 100 Fly, 37th in the 50 Free, 34th in the 100 Free and 4th in the 200 Mixed Free Relay.

Connolly placed 14th in the 200 Free, 2nd in the 50 Free, 3rd in the 100 Back, 6th in the 200 Back, 9th in the 100 Free.

Emery was 8th in the 200 Free, 6th in the 100 Fly, 8th in the 50 Free, 7th in the 200 IM, 14th in the 100 Breast and 3rd in the 100 Free. Chris led the team with eight medals.

Pawel Groszek of Conant High School was 56th in the 50 Free, 9th in the 400 Mixed Free Relay and 8th in the 200 Mixed Free Relay.

Grzegorek was 28th in the 100 Fly, 38 in the 50 Free, 14th in the 200 IM, 20th in the 100 Breast, and 40th in the 100 Free.

McGuire swam 12th in the 200 Free, 14th in the 50 Free, 10th in the 200 IM, 6th in the 100 Back, 11th in the 100 Breast, 8th in the 100 Free.

The top three point winners were Chris Emery 89, Brendan Connolly 85, Michael McGuire 79.

The Girls team were 14th with 100 points; Boys team, 9th with 268 points; and Overall, 12th with 368 points.

Volleyball

October tryouts: The Sports Academy-Northwest at 355 Hastings Drive, Buffalo Grove will hold tryouts for the girls 2007-08 volleyball season at the following times.

• 13- and 14-year-olds (middle school) -- 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 3.

• 15-year-olds (freshmen) -- 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday and 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 3.

• 16-year-olds (sophomores) -- 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 3.

• 17-year-olds (juniors) -- 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 3.

• 18-year-olds (seniors) -- 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 3.

There will be a parent meeting for all age groups from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 14.

The age definitions are:

• 18-year-olds -- Seniors born on or after Sept. 1, 1989, and a high school student during some part of the academic year.

• 17-year-olds -- Juniors born on or after Sept. 1, 1990.

• 16-year-olds -- Sophomores born on or after Sept. 1, 1991.

• 15-year-olds -- Freshmen born on or after Sept. 1, 1992.

• 13- and 14- year-olds -- Middle school, seventh-graders born on or after Sept. 1, 1994, and eighth-graders born on or after Sept. 1, 1993.

Both the TSA tryout registration/waiver, and the USAV tryout waiver and release must be completed by parent/guardian before tryouts. There is a one-time fee of $30 for all tryouts with cash or check payable to TSA.

Sky High tryouts: Sky High Girls Volleyball tryouts will be held at the following times and locations.

• 15's -- 1st tryout 10 a.m. to noon, Sunday; 2nd tryout, 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 4; final tryout, 9 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 11 at Sky High Athletic Center, Crystal Lake.

• 16's -- 1st tryout, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday; 2nd tryout, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 4, final tryout, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Nov. 11 at at Sky High Athletic Center, Crystal Lake.

• 16-/15's -- 1st tryout, 3 to 4:30 p.m., Sunday; 2nd tryout, 3 to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 4; final tryout, 1 to 2:30 p.m., Nov. 11 at Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center, Hoffman Estates.

• 18/17's -- 1st tryout, 4:30 to 6 p.m., Sunday; 2nd tryout, 4:30 to 6 p.m., Nov. 4; final tryout, 3 to 4:30 p.m., Nov. 11 at Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center, Hoffman Estates.

• Note -- The 18/17 regional tryout will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at Sky High Athletic Center, Crystal Lake.

Wrestling

Panther registration: The Palatine Panther Wrestling Club (an Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation club) is taking registration through the Palatine Park District for its 2007-08 season. The program is run under the direction of Ralph Cortez, Fremd High School Varsity Wrestling Coach. Practices are held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday at Fremd High School, Palatine. Youngsters ages 7 to 14 are welcome.

The club will hold an Equipment Handout Night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday in the hallway outside the wrestling room at Fremd High School. This is an opportunity to meet the coaching staff and turn in the necessary paperwork. Returning wrestlers as well as new registrants are welcome.
