Fire ravages Algonquin garage
A leak from a gas tank may have started an aggressive garage fire in an Algonquin home Monday afternoon, officials said.
Algonquin-Lake in the Hills firefighters traced the source of the fire to underneath a car inside the garage on Hartley Drive.
No one was injured in the fire, said Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Battalion Chief Charlie Teson.
Sarah Deger, a neighbor, was outside waiting for her children to come home from school. "I saw a burst of smoke, and heard a hiss," she said. Deger then called 911.
According to Teson, Algonquin-Lake in the Hills firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 2:44 p.m.
"Just after we arrived, the blaze from the car got real big," said Teson, who then called for backup.
Crystal Lake, Carpentersville, Huntley, Cary and East and West Dundee fire departments responded.
Damage did not spread to the rest of the house, officials said.
"The drywall and the fire door between the home and the garage did their job," Teson said. "The home was built to code."
As the electrical wires in the garage were burned, firefighters cut the home's power.
