Jimmy V fundraiser set at ECC

Elgin Community College will hold its fifth annual Jimmy V "Never Give Up" Fundraiser from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, at the Spartan Events Center on the Main Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

Funds will be raised through a silent auction held in conjunction with games featuring ECC's basketball teams to benefit the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

Some of the items for auction include autographed sports items; gift certificates to area restaurants and retail stores; items from Nike, Reebok, the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago White Sox, the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Bulls; and items from DePaul University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Iowa State University, the University of Kentucky and the University of Notre Dame.

The first game, featuring ECC's women's basketball team versus Northwestern University Club Team, will begin at 1 p.m. Game two, featuring ECC's men's basketball team, will begin at 3 p.m. Admission to the auction and basketball games is open to the public and free of charge. All auction bidding will conclude at 4 p.m.

Also, various items will be for sale for $5, $10, $20 and $25 during the event. These items also will be for sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Wednesday, October 24 through Friday, October 26 outside the Student Life Office in the Student Resource Center on the main campus.

All proceeds raised from the event will benefit The V Foundation for Cancer Research, which was established in 1993 by ESPN and the late North Carolina State University basketball coach Jim Valvano to help fund research for cancer. Since its inception, the foundation has raised more than $60 million toward research and finding a cure for more than 100 types of cancer and awarded 200 research grants nationwide.

Locally, the fundraiser has raised more than $20,000 over the last four years. Jimmy V "Never Give Up" t-shirts, hats and bracelets also will be for sale during the event.
