Wrap-up: Geneva notches 20th victory

Lauren Wicinski finished with 8 kills and three other players added 5 kills each as the Geneva girls volleyball team raised their record to 20-8 overall and 10-2 in the WSC with a 25-12, 25-16 win at Kaneland.

Jenny Pokorny had a team-high 3 blocks and set nine different Vikings (20-8, 10-2) for kills, and compiled 26 assists in the match.

"Jenny did a real good job of distributing the ball," said Geneva coach KC Johnsen.

Maggie Yagen had 8 digs and Lindsay Douglas added 6 digs, 3 kills and 2 blocks for the Knights (2-19, 1-11).

Batavia d. Rochelle 25-17, 25-19:ŒLaura Doolin had 6 kills and Kristin Hoffman set 12 assists and added 4 digs for the Bulldogs (17-11, 8-4).

St. Charles North d. Elgin 25-11, 25-9: The North Stars' home win moved them to 19-9 overall and 9-1 in the UEC. Carla Tietz had 4 aces, 4 digs and 3 kills. Annie Stoermer set 6 assists and served 3 aces.

Aurora Central Catholic d. Driscoll 25-23, 24-26, 27-25:ŒIn a tight SCC match, the Chargers (4-19, 1-11) pulled out the win. Sarah Chandler had 9 kills and Brooke Frantzen recorded 7 assists and 4 aces.

Aurora Christian d. Mooseheart:ŒSlow starts are never helpful to athletic teams -- but the start Mooseheart had on Thursday against Aurora Christian was positively fatal.

The host Ramblers fell behind 10-1 in the opening game en route to a 25-8 defeat, then watched the visiting Eagles race to an 8-0 lead in the second game -- and lost that by a 25-8 score.

"I give the girls credit," Mooseheart assistant coach Teresa Ehlert said. "They played hard. I look at players like Basheeba (Mays), and no matter how we were doing, she had a smile on her face."

The Ramblers (7-4) struggled from the start of the match against a more cohesive Aurora Christian attack. When the Ramblers got the ball over the net while returning serve, it moved to the Eagles as a free ball, and Aurora Christian (12-13) made quick work of many of those opportunities.

"We've been working a lot on free ball play," Aurora Christian coach Nicole Andersen said. "It was nice to see all of our hitters so diverse in the game."

Aurora Christian is working its way toward the end of the Private School League season.

"This was exactly what we needed," Andersen said. "It was a good confidence-booster."

Mooseheart had coach Koral Evans on the bench for the first time on Thursday. Mooseheart's middle school coach, Evans be heading the high school varsity program for the final half-dozen matches of the season.

"That went very well," Ehlert said. "It's been good to have her here. The girls have accepted her very well."
