Livingston bounces back strong

At 10 p.m. last Friday, Lake Park football coach Andy Livingston sat glumly on a wooden bench in the Lancers' locker room. His gray sweatshirt sweaty, hair matted after four hours in a ballcap, he gamely answered questions about his team's fourth straight shutout loss, to Waubonsie Valley.

Then came Saturday. At 1 p.m. Livingston looked fresh as a daisy.

The proud papa beamed as he escorted his daughter, Mallory, in front of the Duchon Field grandstand as part of Glenbard West's 57th homecoming celebration. Mallory Livingston, a senior, was a member of Glenbard West homecoming queen Virginia Dallman's court.

Pow-wowed

The 39th annual Crete-Monee Pow-Wow Cross Country Invitational, a multiple-flight event for boys that was the first of its type in Illinois and is one of the largest in the country, was held last Saturday.

Five of the 10 top finishers in the championship flight call DuPage County home: third-place Steve Couch of Naperville North, Aaron Peck (Wheaton Warrenville South, sixth), Jordan Herbert (York, seventh), Brett Lustgarden (Glenbard North, eighth) and Mike Lifson (Downers Grove North, 10th). Deerfield's Scott Friedlander won in 15:02.

Each local outfit showed great depth in the seven-flight invite, plus an open race. Naperville Central's Evan Thayer, Brandon Gittleman (who shoots photos for Illinois Prep Top Times in his down time) and Nick Danzy all won their flights.

Fall classic

Pitchers Sean Flanagan of Downers Grove North and Ian Krol, of Neuqua Valley's defending Class AA baseball champions, Benet catcher Bryan Roberts and West Chicago shortstop Barrett Serrato are among the premier prep ballplayers participating in the 2007 Pitch & Hit Club of Chicago's Wooden Bat Showcase.

Held Saturday at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, it's an invite-only affair that culminates in a 12-inning game at 11:30 a.m.

Earlier in the morning, Notre Dame assistant coach Scott Lawler -- son of Naperville Central assistant coach and IBCA Hall of Famer Phil Lawler -- will join a scout from the Baltimore Orioles for a presentation to the players and their parents titled, "What we look for."

This costs money to get in; for details call (847) 638-0484.

Old schoolers

Saturday at Wheaton College, Wheaton Academy will play its first homecoming football game since the program was mothballed in 1989.

The big deal will be the 50-year reunion of Wheaton Academy's Class of '57. Athletic director Paul Ferguson said seven football players from that class will be present, and recognized in a halftime ceremony. That 1957 squad was undefeated.

Welcome to the club

During tonight's alumni awards dinner at Millikin University, Wheaton Warrenville South head baseball coach and assistant football coach Tim Brylka will be inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.

Former Glenbard East athlete Jerome Jackson is also up for the honor.

Another local athlete getting his due tonight is Mike Domin, out of Naperville North. A 1997 graduate of Carthage College who is entering that school's Athletic Hall of Fame, Domin still holds the soccer program's records for points and assists in both a career and season.

Let's dance

Last week the Philadelphia Flyers assigned former Lake Park student Gino Pisellini to the Philadelphia Phantoms, the Flyers' affiliate in the American Hockey League.
