Shrigley hits century mark in goals as Tigers prevail
Eric Shrigley, a senior forward on Wheaton Warrenville South's boys soccer team, is now officially a member of the Tigers' 100-point club.
After a pair of goals against Batavia Monday, Shrigley now has 16 for the season and has reached a total of 100 points, something only five players have done at Wheaton Warrenville South.
Shrigley's goals led the way in the Tigers' 3-0 nonconference win against the Bulldogs in Batavia.
"We've been around for 30 years so that's a pretty good accomplishment by him," said Wheaton Warrenville South coach Guy Callipari, who resides in Batavia.
Shrigley tallied both goals in the first half, the first arriving at the 18:25 mark and the second with 36.5 remaining before the break.
Wheaton Warrenville South's final goal was netted by Andrew Bellmer with 1:09 left in the game. The Tigers improved to 13-2-1.
This was the sixth time this season the Tigers shut out an opponent. Perhaps having a goalie who is 6-foot-6 in senior Randall Babb may have had something to do with that.
"I think (Babb) can be somewhat intimidating to the opposition," Callipari said. "One of the things he does is command his area very well, and so a lot of the balls that gives most keepers a problem, he's very secure with and can control the area. That takes away a lot of the opposition's play."
But Batavia (2-8-2) is not mainly concerned with scoring goals at this point in the season.
"We had some opportunities, and it would have been nice to put it in, but we are really focusing on playing some defense," said Batavia coach Mark Gianfrancesco. "We have to stop giving up easy goals, and that's basically been our year. At this point, scoring is secondary. (The Tigers) are a quality team, we have to try to stop people scoring against us."
