Pierpont's 72 leads Mundelein to Antioch title

Mundelein's strong start to the boys golf season continued Saturday.

Johnny Pierpont fired a 72 and the Mustangs placed four golfers in the top six, as they won Antioch's Roger Alm Invitational at Spring Valley Country Club in Salem, Wis.

Mundelein, which defeated Lake Forest earlier in the week, carded a 297, 10 strokes better than runner-up Warren.

Pierpont and Marian Central's Stefan Johnson tied for the best round of the day. Mundelein's Ben Schroeder (74) was third, while Warren's Taylor Furmanski and Mundelein's Jason Wirt each shot 75. Phil Senour of Mundelein was sixth with a 76.

Warren received a 76 from Kevin Savage and 78s from Derrik Lindelof and Pat Nelson.

Lakes (sixth, 337) was led by Jonathan Schultz's 79 (15th).

Grayslake North (eighth, 339) received a 78 from Matt Romac.

At Lakes: Wauconda successfully defended its championship, as Becky Breakfield and Lauren Mead each had 35 kills over five matches.

Both Wauconda (7-7) and Antioch (8-1) went 4-1 on the day.

Wauconda setter Kristy Waltenburg lofted 91 assists, Corinne Feight and Michelle Waltenburg served 5 aces apiece, and Lisa Aguilar and Michelle Waltenburg recorded 30 digs apiece.

Antioch, which lost to Wauconda in its first match, was led by Megan Toczek (27 kills, 15 blocks), Katie Lonergan (24 kills, 19 digs, 5 blocks) and Melisa Ori (68 assists, 13 digs).

Lindsay Callanan had 9 blocks and 6 kills. Martha Arntson and Rebecca Ribar had 11 and 10 kills, respectively, for the Sequoits.

Grayslake North and Grayslake Central both went 3-2 in the tournament.

Grayslake North handed Wauconda its only loss of the day, prevailing 26-24, 21-25, 16-14, despite playing without Grace Schlagetter and Michelle Quigley, both of whom were injured in the Knights' three-game loss to Grayslake Central.

"It was a phenomenal match (against Wauconda)," Knights coach Nikki Kirchway said. "The girls really wanted to play for Grace and Michelle. Although they were immensely upset with the two girls' injuries, we pulled together as a team and played with intensity, desire and heart."

Grayslake North (6-7), which already has more wins than it did last year, received another strong performance from Kaitlyn Klausner (233 of 233 setting, 69 assists, 27 kills).

Megan Falk's 34 kills and 11 aces led the Knights.

"This weekend's tournament was another great confidence boost for the girls," Kirchway said. "The girls really stepped it up and beat the first-place team (Wauconda). That match was a great win."

Grayslake Central won its first three matches before losing to Wauconda and Antioch.

The Rams' Tory Dohm and Anna Dlesk had 31 and 22 kills, respectively. Lauren Novak anf Bri Anderson each served 8 aces. Shannon Curtiz had 23 digs.

"We had a great morning and I was very impressed with our resiliency after a tough week," Grayslake Central Jason Janczak said. "We are starting to come together as a team more and more."

Grayslake Central edged Grayslake North 11-25, 25-23, 16-14.

"Credit Grayslake North," Janczak said. "They gave us and several other teams a good wakeup call today. We are looking forward to a great rivalry."

Lakes finished just 1-4, but that doesn't tell the whole story for the Eagles.

"We were in every match but again could not finish," Lakes coach Carla Thompson said. "We blocked great some games and made our passing game much better."

The Eagles' statistical leaders included Kathy Szczesniak (12 aces), Kelly Bol (13 kills), Keshia Cunningham (20 blocks) and Katie Thompson (22 digs).

"This was a great tournament," Carla Thompson said. "The teams were very evenly match."
