Naperville N. fits in just fine at Plainfield N.

Plainfield North's Best of the West girls volleyball tournament apparently is the new West Aurora's Varsity Fest.

Ten teams from last year's tournament at West Aurora decided to play at the brand-new tournament Plainfield North hosted Thursday and Saturday.

"We knew Plainfield North was going to host a tournament similar to last year that we played in (at West Aurora), and a lot of good teams came over. We wanted to be a part of that," Naperville North coach Jennifer Urban said.

Naperville North went undefeated in the 12-team tournament and improved to 5-1 this season.

"We had a tough pool on Thursday, and to win the tournament, we had to beat Barrington, Crystal Lake South and Rosary, who are three really tough teams," Urban said.

In the Gold Division for first place, Naperville North beat Plainfield North, 25-18, 22-25, 25-18.

Right before that, the Huskies topped Rosary 25-23, 25-20 to get to the championship game.

"It's tough playing back-to-back (matches), but we know that's what is similar to regionals and sectionals," Urban said. "We were anxious to have that opportunity."

Plainfield North began its day topping St. Charles North, 15-25, 25-18, 25-19.

"We took the first game handily, and then the minute they got the lead on us, it was like we lost," St. Charles North coach Lindsay Trudell said. "We certainly didn't lose the match at that time, but it seemed like all the wind was out of our sails once teams get up on us."

Rosary finished third after bouncing back from its loss to the Huskies by defeating St. Charles North 25-15, 25-21.

"For the first week of the season, we are happy with third," Rosary coach Lisa Kasper said, whose Royals are now 5-1. "It would have been nice to be in the finals, but losing to Naperville North is nothing to be upset about. We saw some stuff we need to work on, so this was a good measure of where we are at right now."

The North Stars are now 4-2 overall.

"It's terribly disappointing," Trudell said of her team's fourth-place finish. "We have some things to work on. Hopefully, they will get ironed out."

In the Silver Division, Crystal Lake South placed fifth after beating Batavia (25-19, 25-14) and Barrington (25-16, 25-19).

"We hung in there with (Crystal Lake South), but in the second game, we couldn't keep up with them defensively," Batavia coach Lori Trippi-Payne said.

Batavia (2-4 overall) avenged an earlier-season loss against Wheaton Academy by topping the Warriors (25-22, 25-20) in its first match of the day.

Wheaton Academy ended up beating Barrington (25-16, 25-16) for seventh place.

In the Bronze Division, Huntley took ninth when it beat Plainfield Central. Oswego East beat Oswego in three games for eleventh place.
