Briefs: Fire alarm spurs pot bust
Lisle-Woodridge firefighters stumbled upon a marijuana-growing operation at a Lisle apartment complex while responding to an alarm. Police were called just after 8 p.m. Wednesday to the complex at 2252 Abbeywood Drive. They were alerted to what was described as an "extensive" cannabis-growing operation by firefighters who discovered it while making well-being checks during the alarm. Police said they found more than 90 plants in various stages of growth as well as "intricate lighting and venting equipment." Tristan J. Chiu, 25, was arrested and charged with unlawful production of cannabis. He was transported to the DuPage County jail in Wheaton where he is being held in lieu of $7,500 bond, police said.
Garbage contract approved
Aurora city officials this week approved a new garbage contract with Allied Waste. Residents will continue using a sticker program but will now pay a monthly $3 recycling fee, which starts in January. Seniors 65 and older will receive a $1 discount on the monthly fee. The sticker plan maintains a $2.35 tag per bag for the next three years. In 2010-2012, sticker prices will jump to $2.60 and the recycling fee will increase to $3.35. The plan approved by aldermen includes unlimited unbundled brush pickup and eight-week fall leaf pickup, as well as options for garbage carts. If residents use a sticker a week, the plan could cost them about $160 a year."
