Travel tryouts: The Elk Grove Travelers rescheduled their 2008 full-time travel baseball tryouts for Sept. 2 at Lions Park in Elk Grove Village at the following times.

•U10 and U14 Full Time -- 9 to 11 a.m.

•U11 and U13 Full Time -- 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

•U12 Full Time -- 2 to 4 p.m.

Players should arrive 20 minutes early and go to the registration table at Field No. 1. They should not wear travel hats, travel jerseys, or anything displaying their name. Anyone unable to attend on Sunday may come to the make-up date at 7 p.m. Tuesday which will also be at Lions Park. For more information, call Steve Brandt at (847) 321-8829.

Part-time and tournament teams will be formed after Jan. 1, 2008.

Basketball

Girls clinic: Any girl interested in playing basketball this winter for the Conant High School girls feeder program is welcome to attend a free basketball clinic from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 8 at Conant High School, 700 E. Cougar Trail, Hoffman Estates. Dan Travers, head coach for girls varsity basketball at Conant will conduct the clinic, assisted by coaches of the feeder program.

The clinic is open to all fifth-, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade girls residing in the Conant High School area who are interested in trying out to play this winter. Tryouts will be held later in September and October at specific times and dates to be announced.

Summer tournaments: The Mount Prospect Fire, the all-star travel fastpitch softball teams within the Mount Prospect Park District, had successful tournaments in Rockford and Streamwood.

The 16U team, managed by Brian Jarosz, won the Illinois USSSA State 16U Championship in Rockford. The 16U team was led by some outstanding play by Kim Jarosz, Kelsey Prochenski. Kayti Nowak and Kaila Walter.

The 14U team, managed by Mike Naranjo, won the Streamwood Park District Summer Slam Tournament, finishing with a 6-0 record, and outscored opponents by combined scores of 76-25. This included a 14-4, four-inning victory in the championship game over the Addison Glow Sticks.

The pitching of Amanda Schuck (5-0) and Mary Styzek (1-0) overpowered their opponents. Other outstanding players were third baseman Paige Thornton, catcher Coley Naranjo, shortstop Gina Wlodarski, and center fielder Emily Jarosz.

The 10U Red team, managed by Dan Gadow, placed second in the 10-team field at the Streamwood tournament, and the 12U team, managed by Bob Iovino, placed third in the 12-team field in Streamwood.

Volleyball

Italy trip: The Sport's Academy-Northwest's Team USA 17U Volleyball team, selected from across the Northwest suburbs, recently returned victorious from tournaments in Italy. Bringing home first and second place tournament trophies, The Sports Academy athletes played more than 40 games in 15 matches against Italian teams in Rome, Vatican City, Nettuno, Sienna, Florence, Rimini, San Marino, Rovigo, Verona, Venice and Milan.

Sports Academy tryouts: The Sports Academy-Northwest's tryouts for boys and girls club volleyball begin in September. Attention to athletic development, commitment to professional, nonparent coaching staff, and sound skills development helped develop the program that has grown to more than triple in size in two years of competitive play. A five-court indoor facility recently at 355 Hastings Drive, Buffalo Grove.
