Free concert Aug. 5:

The Lake Shore Symphony Orchestra will perform a free show Sunday at Mundelein's Kracklauer Park. The show, part of a summer concert series, is set to run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the park, on Seymour Avenue at Courtland Street. People should bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. Food will be available.

Developer to clean property:

Fox Lake officials announced Friday that Exceed Development in Antioch will clean up and landscape their property at Grand and Forest avenues in downtown by Wednesday. Village trustee Ed Bender said Exceed said a landscaper will be called in to grade and level the site of the former Forest School. They also will plant grass seed to make it an empty lot. Village officials have been upset with Exceed for not maintaining the land after they demolished the old school. Bender said at least one citation has been issued to the company for its unsightly appearance. If Exceed does not clean the property, officials said the village would clean the land, then send the bill to the company.

Staples plan changed:

The Staples store in the developing Shoppes of Gregg's Landing area on Milwaukee Avenue in Vernon Hills will have brick on all four sides, cultured stone on the columns, added lighting on the sides and rear, and other amenities following approval last week by the village board. Trustees previously approved the relocation of the store on the portion of the property south of Gregg's Parkway and west of Milwaukee Ave. The changes reflect a consistent push by village leaders to upgrade materials and designs of proposed buildings. The shopping center is to be anchored by a 170,000 square foot Lowe's home center.

Talbett gets new post:

Lake County Board member Michael Talbett has been named chairman of the National Association of Counties' telecommunications committee. The committee helps develop national policy regarding cable services, information technology and other related topics. Talbett is a Lake Zurich Republican who's served on the county board since 2000.

Island Lake ups security:

After a late-night security breach at village hall, Island Lake trustees have increased security. Trustee Donald Verciglio said all doors will be locked after 4:30 p.m. at the village hall and entry will only be allowed through the front. Signs will be posted directing all traffic to the front door, he said, and locks on all doors have been changed. Also, guards will check the doors throughout the night to ensure they have remained closed, he said. "We are taking steps," Verciglio said.
