Schaumburg Accepting Nominations Through April 2 for Volunteer of the Year

The Village of Schaumburg is continuing to accept nominations for Volunteer of the Year to be recognized at its upcoming luncheon - a public event that will feature acclaimed documentary host, producer and broadcaster, Bill Kurtis, as the keynote speaker.

Nominations for Schaumburg's Volunteer of the Year, Volunteer Organization of the Year and Youth Volunteer of the Year will be accepted through Monday, April 2. Nominees can represent social, civic, religious, community, school and medical organizations. For-profit and political organizations are excluded. Nomination materials are available on the Village of Schaumburg website at http://bit.ly/2lgHcj0.

"Nominating someone to be recognized for his or her volunteer efforts is a great way to honor and thank those who give selflessly to make our community a better place," said Schaumburg Special Events Coordinator Roxane Benvenuti. "If you know people who volunteer in Schaumburg, we hope you will consider nominating them for their contributions."

Award recipients will be selected by a panel of judges from nominations received from residents and the business community. Recipients will be honored at the annual Volunteer of the Year luncheon that will take place Wednesday, April 18 at Chandler's, 401 N. Roselle Road in Schaumburg. The keynote speaker at this year's luncheon will be acclaimed documentary host, producer and broadcaster, Bill Kurtis. The luncheon is open to the public; those interested in attending may register and pay online at http://bit.ly/2lgHcj0 by April 9. Attendees do not need to be nominated or have someone nominated to attend.

Kurtis is celebrating his 45th anniversary in the field of broadcasting. His past includes time spent as a reporter at WBBM-TV and as an anchor of The Channel Two News. Kurtis moved on to the network level at CBS where he anchored the CBS Morning News and contributed to CBS Reports.

In 1990, he founded Kurtis Productions where he worked on the Award-winning series The New Explorers and created programs such as Investigative Reports, Cold Case Files and Investigating History. Kurtis has also served as the host of A&E's American Justice-the longest running non-fiction justice series on cable. Cold Case Files was nominated for 2004 and 2005 Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Nonfiction Series.

Kurtis is also an author: the "Death Penalty on Trial: Crisis in American Justice" (Public Affairs) is his most recent book, which explores issues surrounding capital punishment in America.

Kurtis is the recipient of numerous humanitarian, journalism, and broadcasting awards. He is a member of the board of directors of several distinguished organizations including The Nature Conservancy, Chicago Green City Market, Chicago Botanic Garden, Brookfield Zoo, and the Field Museum of Chicago.
