Library's Literacy and Citizenship Classes Begin in January

Citizenship, reading and English as a second language classes will begin in January at the Schaumburg Township District Library's locations in Schaumburg and Hanover Park. The Central Library is located at 130 S. Roselle Road, in Schaumburg, while the Hanover Park Branch is located at 1266 Irving Park Road. All classes are free, but require registration at the first session. The following programs are presented in partnership with School District 214 Continuing Education.

Read to Learn will be offered from 9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. on Mondays, Jan. 22 through April 23 in the Rasmussen Room of the Central Library. It will also take place from 9 a.m. - Noon on Wednesdays, Jan. 24 through April 18 in the Central's Library's Rasmussen Room. Students will improve their reading and writing skills by working with trained tutors. At the first class, each person's reading levels will be tested.

Citizenship Classes will take place from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturdays, Jan. 27 through May 19 at the Hanover Park Branch. They will also be held from 6:30-9:30 p.m., Mondays and Fridays, Jan. 29 through April 30 in the Adult Classroom of the Central Library. Participants will practice reading and writing in English, learn how to answer citizenship questions from the N-400 application and discuss obstacles to becoming a U.S. citizen. A green card is required to register at the first class.

An intermediate level English as a Second Language (ESL) class will take place from 12:30-3:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, from Feb. 13 through April 26 in the Adult Classroom of the Central Library. Students will improve their English speaking and reading skills, with reading levels tested at the first class.
