Woodfield Area Children's Organization sponsors breakfast program at Addams Junior High for second year

The District 54 Education Foundation is pleased to announce that the Woodfield Area Children's Organization (WACO) is sponsoring the breakfast program at Addams Junior High for the second year in a row. WACO's $10,000 donation to the Foundation's Food 4 Thought program will provide breakfast for all students in need at Addams for the 2017-18 school year. WACO also sponsored the breakfast program at Addams in 2016-17.

"WACO is very pleased to sponsor Jane Addams Junior High for the second straight year. We wish we were able to sponsor all 28 schools," WACO Director Dave Yurko said.

The D54 Foundation is committed to raising $280,000 to fund breakfast programs at all District 54 schools to ensure that students begin their day ready to learn. Nearly one-fourth of District 54 students qualify for the federal free lunch program, and while District 54 receives state and federal funds for the lunch program, schools that want to offer breakfast programs to our students in need must raise the money on their own. Currently the Foundation is funding breakfast programs at 10 District 54 schools for nearly 1,300 eligible students.

"WACO was our first all-school Food 4 Thought sponsor, and we are so grateful for their continued support of this vitally important program," Foundation Chair Tom Manzardo said.

Donations of any size to Food 4 Thought have a direct impact on students' lives. It costs just $5 a week, to provide a healthy breakfast to a student; a $200 donation provides breakfast to a child for a full school year. Businesses/corporations and individuals can also sponsor an entire school for a year with a donation of $10,000.

"Children cannot learn on an empty stomach," WACO President Geri McCall-Barrath said. "WACO challenges other nonprofits and businesses to get behind the Food 4 Thought program."
