Library Workshop Offers Hands-on Experiences

All ages are welcome to drop in to Workshop, a glass-walled section of the Schaumburg Library, 130 S. Roselle Rd., for a variety of programs that take place from 1-3 p.m. every Saturday. Workshop is a place where patrons can build, paint, mold, write, sew and use their imaginations to engage in a variety of fun, hands-on experiences.

Upcoming programs in August begin with "Letters to Soldiers" on Aug. 5. This make-a-difference project provides the opportunity to show appreciation to the military men and women serving our country. The library will supply paper, pens, markers, stickers and other embellishments for letters ranging from plain to fancy. After the program, library staff will send the letters to Operation Gratitude, an organization that sends care packages to U.S. military personnel deployed overseas. Letters may also be written to military veterans. In addition to supplies, the library will also provide simple instructions that will be placed on the Workshop tables.

"Friendship Bracelets" is slated for Aug. 12. All ages are welcome to weave and knot colorful bracelets to share with friends. Use the supplies and simple instructions provided to make a pretty bracelet for yourself or a friend.

Anyone interested in watching the moon pass in front of the sun Monday, Aug. 21 may want to stop by Workshop on Aug. 19 for the "Solar Eclipse Projector" project. This simple design, using a cardboard box and a few other supplies, allows for safe viewing of the eclipse.

Get ready for autumn by coming to Workshop for the "Leaf Garland" program on Aug. 26. From rustic to glitzy, the library will supply a plethora of materials for designing a pretty home decoration. Raffia, washi tape, colored paper and much more will be transformed into a seasonal garland.

Fans of Doctor Who won't want to miss "Dr. Who Comics Day" on Sept 2, when Workshop will feature Dr. Who-themed projects. All ages are welcome to use the library's supplies to make bookmarks and other special crafts.

Cat enthusiasts are invited to watch silly and adorable cat videos while making a cat toy during the "Cat Film Festival" on Sept. 9. Participants will leave with a little gift for their favorite feline.

All Workshop programs are free and do not require registration. For a full listing, see the library's August-September Guide or visit www.ShaumburgLibrary.org.
