Anderson Animal Shelter expands with North Aurora adoption center

Anderson Animal Shelter has partnered with Pet Supplies Plus to open a satellite adoption center in North Aurora.

About 15 dogs and puppies and 25 cats and kittens are now available for adoption at the new center, located next to the Pet Supplies Plus store at 180 N. Randall Road.

The North Aurora satellite adoption center - the first-ever for Anderson - will be open seven days a week (noon to 6 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends).

Anderson's main shelter, located at 1000 S. La Fox St. in South Elgin, will continue all its regular adoption hours, services and programs. The shelter's on-site veterinary clinic will provide support for the satellite adoption center. Humane education programming, dog training and other shelter services will continue to be offered through the main shelter location.

"The North Aurora satellite adoption center is an opportunity to save more pets' lives," said Beth Drake, executive director of Anderson Animal Shelter. "Every adoption is a life saved, so the more adoptions we do, the more lives we save! We greatly appreciate our partnership with Pet Supplies Plus, which has given us the chance to serve and reach more potential adopters in our community."

The goal is for 1,500 pets to be adopted through the North Aurora center in 2017. Last year, at its main shelter, Anderson achieved a record 3,008 adoptions - nearly three times as many as 2014 and the most in any year in the organization's history.

Anderson has been saving pets and serving the Fox Valley for the past 50 years. About 80,000 animals have been adopted from Anderson since 1966. The 1,500-square-foot adoption center in North Aurora shares a wall with Pet Supplies Plus so adopters can walk next door to purchase any supplies they may need to care for their newly adopted family member.

"We're excited to partner with such a reputable, no-kill shelter like Anderson. We share the mutual goal of helping pets find loving homes to live long, happy and healthy lives," said George Lennon, franchise owner of the North Aurora Pet Supplies Plus store. "With Anderson's exceptional pet care, you know you will be adopting a well cared for pet. We also want pet parents to know we're here for them at every stage of their pet's life. Our program for new pet parents provides unbiased guidance in nutrition, grooming and pet care with options to choose what they want while still saving them hundreds of dollars."

At the North Aurora adoption center, adopters and visitors will find similar animal- and people-friendly spaces as the main shelter, which was renovated in 2014. Cat condos provide separate spaces for kitties to comfortably sleep, eat and greet visitors. The dog kennels are spacious. Anderson employees will staff the satellite center, and, along with volunteers, they will socialize and care for the adoptable pets.
