Auction at Geneva church raises $4,000 for local organizations

The Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva raised $4,000 for local humanitarian organizations at its "Carnivale" themed auction on Nov. 5.

People packed the church's historic sanctuary to bid on a variety of items, including baskets of donated goods and services from local businesses and church members.

Funds raised are being divided equally between the Northern Illinois Food Bank and Mutual Ground, a shelter for domestic abuse victims in Aurora.

Local businesses that donated items included Graham's Chocolates, Elements Therapeutics, The Spice House, and Kilwin's Chocolates, Fudge and Ice Cream.

"The auction provided great fun for members and friends of the congregation while at the same time raising money that will make a difference for our neighbors," said board president and auction organizer Jean Pierce. "The money we raised will go a long way toward helping our neighbors in need."

The Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva, established in 1842 and the oldest church in Geneva, is a diverse, welcoming community that endeavors to make its covenant a living reality. It provides religious education and opportunities for spiritual growth. They encourage individual and mutual responsibility as together they work to be a liberal religious voice in the community and a force for compassionate social justice.
