Elgin Donor Club's annual book review features 'Capital Dames'

The Donor Club of Elgin is pleased to announce its annual Book Review will be held on Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Elgin Country Club, 2575 Weld Road in Elgin.

Jenny Riddle will present a dramatic book review featuring Cokie Roberts' "Capital Dames: The Civil War and the Women of Washington, 1848-1868." Riddle will captivate you as she shares the stories of the women of the Civil War such as Clara Barton, Dorothea Dix, Mary Todd Lincoln, Varina (Mrs. Jefferson) Davis and ex-slave, Mrs. Lizzie Keckley. You won't want to miss learning how these women and others in Roberts' book reacted to the war, influenced the war, and moved women farther along the road to enlightenment and equality.

The doors will open at 11 a.m. with lunch at noon. There will be homemade cookies, peanut brittle and bread for sale, as well as gently used books. Multiple basket raffles also will be available. Tickets for the luncheon and review are $30 and are available through club members. Tickets will not be sold at the door. All proceeds from the Book Review are donated to local charities that benefit area residents.

The Donor Club of Elgin has been an active philanthropic club since 1913 and founded the Elgin Day Care Center in 1920. They have continued to support this center as well as several other organizations including the Community Crisis Center, Elgin Interfaith Food Pantry, Fox Valley Hands of Hope, Boys and Girls Club of Elgin and the ECC Foundation scholarships among others.
