New certificate programs help students aid their communities' health, wellness

Do you want to help others? Do you want to make a difference in your community?

Skyrocketing health care costs, a greater emphasis on diet and environment, and how they relate to our overall health have magnified the need for better education, community engagement and research into the effectiveness of nutrition and wellness initiatives.

The Master of Science (M.S.) in Nutrition and Wellness program at Benedictine University provides a powerful foundation in nutrition and health risk assessment, motivation, intervention and evaluation. The degree opens the doors to careers in health promotion and risk reduction, therapeutic intervention and community education.

Now, Benedictine is offering two new online certificates within the M.S. in Nutrition and Wellness program for professionals seeking to enhance their expertise and expand their ability to impact local, state and regional health services - the certificate in Community Nutrition Engagement and the certificate in Health Research Methods.

The certificate in Community Nutrition Engagement is designed to help students assess and identify existing and emerging problems in communities and plan, develop and evaluate practical solutions. Students must complete four, 4-quarter-credit-hour courses in Nutrition Health Policy, Maternal and Child Nutrition, Nutrition in Aging and Community Engagement to earn a certificate.

The certificate in Health Research Methods helps students conduct and evaluate research and analyze the outcomes of its application. To earn this certificate, students must complete four, 4- quarter-credit-hour courses in Biostatistics, Health and Wellness Research and Planning, Epidemiology, and Data Analysis and Interpretation.

Certificate programs at Benedictine University are an excellent way to get started on a degree or gain an extra edge in a profession. Certificate programs also prepare students to obtain the professional certifications they need to gain employment or advance in their careers.

The M.S. in Nutrition and Wellness program at Benedictine is designed to enable graduates to demonstrate in-depth knowledge and application of key areas of nutritional science; assess, plan and design health education or training programs for individuals or groups; effectively communicate health education and health promotion; plan, conduct and analyze outcomes of research; and apply critical-thinking skills.

With appropriate course selection, graduates of the M.S. in Nutrition and Wellness program may be eligible for certification by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing as a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).
