Live stream charity event to help rescue animals

After adopting a rescue puppy earlier this year, Hampshire resident David Maas has decided to help others by raising awareness and funds during the 24-hour "No-Pause for Paws: A Gaming Live Stream Charity Event" Saturday, April 25.

"I rescued my puppy, Celes, at the end of January from the Rescue Warrior Corps in Elgin," Maas said, "She wasn't in bad shape at all, but she did have some health issues left over from before she was rescued."

Maas' puppy, a half-Great Pyrenees/half border collie, was found with her brother abandoned in a forest in Oklahoma. Through a couple different organizations, she was rescued from a high-kill shelter and wound up in with a local foster family.

"I wasn't exactly looking to adopt a dog," Maas said, "but when I saw her picture, I wanted to meet her. And when I met her, I knew I wanted to take her home."

After a month of visits to the vet and various medications, Celes was given a clean bill of health and Maas knew he wanted to do something to help other rescue pets and the organizations that save them.

The best way to do that, he decided, was to host a 24-hour video game live stream fundraiser, which he will cast on Twitch.tv for all to watch.

"I've done this once before for a different fundraiser," Maas said, "But that was very basic, I didn't even have a camera and mic set up. It was just gameplay footage. This time, people will be able to watch, listen, and interact with Celes and I the entire time."

The 24-Hour No-Pause for Paws: A Gaming Live Stream Charity Event will be free to watch on both www.themaaseffect.com and www.twitch.tv/themaaseffect.

"At the end of the stream, half of the money will be donated to the Rescue Warriors Corps and the other half will go to the ASPCA," Maas said. "It's also completely fine if someone can't donate, I also just want to raise awareness. If I can introduce to one person the possibility of adopting a rescue animal, I'll consider the fundraiser a success."

Curious viewers can find the charity stream at www.twitch.tv/themaaseffect Saturday, April 25 starting at 8 a.m. For details, visit www.themaaseffect.com.
