'Real Downton Abbey' DAR tea successful fundraiser

The annual English High Tea and Drama hosted by the Signal Hill Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was the most successful fundraiser in its five-year history.

Guests enjoyed a traditional high tea luncheon, boutique shopping, themed gift basket raffle and a special performance of "The True Story of Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey" by actress Lynn Rymarz.

The event, which took place at The Garlands of Barrington, was host to nearly 100 members and guests.

Rymarz portrayed Lady Almina, who lived in Highclere Castle with her husband, the fifth Earl of Carnarvon. She shared several stories from her personal life highlighting the many philanthropic ventures she spearheaded, including turning the castle into a hospital for wounded WWI soldiers. She also revealed her husband's passion for pyramids, leading him to the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen.

Chairmen for the event were Candice Meyer, Catherine Packer, Carol Steelman and Kathy Boyle.

Proceeds from the tea will support local scholarship programs, youth awards, conservation efforts and veterans' services.

The Signal Hill Chapter is a Barrington area women's service organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism.
