Glenbard South wins big, stays undefeated in MSC
It didn’t take long for Glenbard South to show exactly why it remains undefeated in the Metro Suburban Conference.
The Raiders (11-6) coasted to a sixth consecutive girls basketball conference win Thursday night, overpowering Timothy Christian 58-14 in Glen Ellyn. Glenbard South was at the top of its game in spite of the holiday break and weather-related missed practices.
Junior Sarah Nelson started off the game by scoring the first two points for Timothy Christian, but after one basket Glenbard South demonstrated its dominance and never looked back.
Glenbard South scored 16 unanswered points to finish the first quarter, then scored the first 13 points of the second quarter.
“Our execution on offense was key,” Glenbard South coach Julie Fonda said. “We haven’t played a game since the 28th, so coming back after a break and a couple snow days, you never know what to expect.”
The majority of points scored by the Raiders were well-distributed between five players. Three players broke into double digits. Junior Megan Smith ended with a total of 13 points, while senior Tomei Ball and junior Sydney Bauman added another 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Raiders had an explosive second quarter, with Smith scoring 10 points to lead the way. Going into the locker room at the end of the first half, the Raiders led 41-3.
The Raiders also forced 19 turnovers within the first half, showing just how strong they were on both ends of the court.
“Defense is the name of our game,” Fonda said. “They are definitely in the right spots, they’re adapting to how they are trying to break our press and they’re doing all the right things.”
Kaitlyn Gerhke ended a 29-point run by the Raiders after sinking a free throw for the Trojans at 3:20 in the second quarter to end the run.
The Trojans (4-12, 2-5) treated this game as a learning experience, especially after coming off of a long layoff of their own.
“We struggled a lot with the turnovers,” first-year Timothy Christian coach Michele Strube said. “We have some young players, so we’re working on slowing it down and handling the ball.”
Strube stressed to her players at halftime that they needed to “… remember what we did over break, the pickup games, the fun and just playing. Relax and play.”
Gerhke and Alexis Hoogendoorn both scored 5 points for the Trojans.
