Schaumburg receives prestigious Arts in the Park Award

Area audiences, actors, singers, dancers and musicians know firsthand of the cultural programs offered by the Schaumburg Park District. Thanks to an award from Arts Alliance Illinois, the rest of Illinois does, too.

The Helen Doria Arts in the Park Award was presented to district officials at the recent Best of the Best awards event hosted by the Illinois Association of Park Districts.

Also honored at the event with years-of-service recognitions were Park District Commissioners Dave Johnson (40 years) and Bob Schmidt (10 years). The overall district was honored for 50 years serving its residents.

The Doria Award recognizes park districts and other agencies that support the arts and partner with artists and arts organizations to enhance their community’s quality of life.

“The district is honored to receive this distinguished award,” said Park District Executive Director Tony LaFrenere. “Our cultural arts programs are successful because of the dedicated and innovative staff, and enthusiastic support from the community.”

The award recognizes the district’s dance, theater, visual arts and music programs; and its cultural partnerships with other agencies, including the Village of Schaumburg, school districts, and the Chicago Cultural Alliance.

Helen Doria was a cultural programmer for the Chicago Park District and the first executive director of Chicago’s Millennium Park. Schaumburg was one of three districts recognized with this year’s award.
