Addison’s First Build a Boat – Cardboard Boat Race

With August rapidly approaching, it seems summer is almost over for some, however the fun continues at Addison Park District with the Build a Boat cardboard boat race on Saturday, August 3. The race starts at 12:00 pm at Club Fitness’ indoor pool.

To compete in this race, contestants must design and construct a human-powered cardboard boat which is capable racing 50 meters. All boats must be designed and built prior to the day of the race. Boats may be powered by canoe paddles, kayak paddles or muscle power! The winner will be who makes it 50 meters the fastest or whichever boat makes it the farthest without sinking. There is a list of acceptable building materials, restricted materials and design considerations listed on the Park District website: www.addisonparks.org

All boats need to be dropped off at Club Fitness by 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 3 to be eligible for the design contest. Spectators are welcome to check out the boats and cast their ballot for the “People’s Choice Award.” The judges will be looking very closely at all entries. In fact, the judging panel includes a member of the U.S. Coast Guard.

The race commences at 12:00 p.m. as racers attempt to keep their craft afloat and race 50 meters before their opponents. The winning team will receive a trophy and cash prize.

Preregistration is required for this event which has an entry fee of $20 per boat. Please contact the Addison Park District to register or for more information at (630)233-7275.
