Police said the Addison teen was with a group of friends and trying to cross the thoroughfare on foot shortly after midnight when he went into the path of a northbound BMW. Domek sustained severe injuries to his head and legs, authorities said.

Police said they don't know why Domek, a linebacker on the high school football team, was trying to cross the road. The driver was unable to stop, they said.

The accident prevented Domek from attending graduation hours later on Sunday and has prompted an outpouring of support from the Addison Trail community.
