Schaumburg Park District offers programs for schools, Scouts and other organized youth groups on the seasonal tradition of maple sugaring until March 29, at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road.

The programs allow children to learn how maple trees are tapped and how sap collected is used to make maple syrup and sugar. The programs are both educational and hands-on with participants able to hand drill a log and pound in a metal spile, simulating the process used to tap trees. Children observe sap being boiled into syrup and compare the taste of real maple syrup with commercial pancake syrup. Programs for younger children also include a short puppet show. The programs last 90 minutes.

Reservations are required at least two weeks prior to the desired program date. Fee is $4.75 per participant. Reservations are accepted between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at (847) 985-2100.

Spring Valley also offers youth programs on a variety of topics throughout the year.
