Endorsement: Nekritz over Greenberg

In her 10 years in the Illinois House, Democrat Elaine Nekritz of Northbrook stands out as a hardworking representative of the 57th District, which stretches along northern Cook County from Waukegan Road to Route 53. A straight-shooter who can be counted on to tell constituents what they need to hear rather than what they want to hear, Nekritz’s recent inclusion in House leadership boosts her effectiveness — as long as she doesn’t become too close to remain independent. We endorse Nekritz. One area where we would urge her to tread carefully: Her support for shifting some future state pension costs to local schools. Nekritz’ recent plan to phase that in more slowly than originally envisioned shows she’s listening, but we remain concerned the shift could hurt suburban schools in the long run. She is challenged by Jonathan Greenberg of Northbrook, who emphasizes a desire to repeal the state income tax hike and do more to promote a healthy business environment in the state. It’s a strong platform, but Nekritz has the more promising experience and leadership record.
