All 4 Dist. 214 board members to seek re-election

All four members of the Northwest Suburban High School District 214 school board that are up for re-election say they will seek another term in the April 2013 elections.

Mimi Cooper, Todd Younger, Mark Hineman and James Perkins each plan to run for another four-year term on the school board, saying they hope to continue the success the district has achieved in recent years.

“I’m proud that the district is getting national recognition,” said Younger, who was appointed to the board in 2011 and will run for his first full term in 2013. “My goal is to continue to build on our success and support the administration in a fiscally responsible way.”

Younger graduated from John Hersey High School and now has two children attending Prospect High School. Perkins is the board president and Hineman serves as its vice president.

“I feel it very important to continue the great history of balanced budgets and no new referendums,” Hineman said. “At the same time, we have been increasing student achievement and opportunities in college-bound, military and industrial career paths.”

Cooper, one of the board’s longest-serving members, will be seeking her seventh term.

“I think there’s a lot that’s coming down the path that will have to be addressed,” she said, noting decisions from Springfield dealing with pensions and insurance. “We’ve done such a good job holding the line on so many things that I want to keep that going.”

First elected in 1989, Cooper said she enjoys being a part of graduations and ceremonies honoring student achievements, “but I like to believe that we’re really doing right by a lot of kids.” Nominating packets began circulating this week and are due by December 24.

District 214 is the second-largest high school district in the state, serving more than 12,000 students in Buffalo Grove, Wheeling, Elk Grove, Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, Rolling Meadows and Prospect Heights.
