Six area high schools have been named Democracy Schools by the Illinois Civic Mission Coalition for providing "high-quality civic learning opportunities" for students. The schools are Maine South in Park Ridge, Glenbard East in Lombard, Glenbard West in Glen Ellyn, Neuqua Valley in Naperville, Waubonsie Valley in Aurora and Lakes Community in Lake Villa. Each school will receive a stipend from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation to invest in civic learning initiatives. Since 2006, 17 Illinois high schools have been recognized as Democracy Schools after completing a schoolwide civic assessment.
