Willowbrook wins first regional title since 1973

Willowbrook (22-14) claimed its first regional title since 1973 by beating District 88 rival Addison Trail 4-1 Saturday.

Thirteenth-seeded Willowbrook upset the fifth-seeded Blazers in the Class 4A Wheaton North regional final behind a pair of runs in the top of the first inning and a complete-game effort on the mound by Alex Tiberi. The Warriors advance to Wednesday’s Schaumburg sectional semifinals to face No. 16 Bartlett, a 5-3 winner over Lake Park.

Willowbrook took a 2-0 lead on Matt Rothmund’s sacrifice fly and a dropped third strike that scored Cal Moltzan. Scott Babica’s RBI double narrowed Addison Trail’s deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the third.

The Warriors gained some distance when Dom Battaglia singled in a run in the fifth inning. They earned their fourth run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Mark Garbacz.

Tiberi went the distance while striking out three and scattering 5 hits.
