Eating champ, “Star Wars” night headline Schaumburg Boomers promotional schedule

The Schaumburg Boomers not only will be returning professional baseball to the Northwest suburbs next month, but they're bringing a lot of other fun as well.

The team Monday released a schedule of the giveaways, special appearances and theme nights that will be running throughout its inaugural season at Boomers Stadium, 1999 S. Springinsguth Road in Schaumburg.

Opening Night at 6:30 p.m. May 25 will be accompanied by an Orange T-shirt giveaway for the first 4,000 fans, magnet schedules for the first 3,500 fans and the first of the season's fireworks nights after the game.

The next day, at 6 p.m. May 26, world-famous competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi will be at the game to sign autographs and demonstrate his award-winning skill. Kobayahsi is the six-time winner of the Nathan's Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest. The game also features a Prairie Chicken foam helmet giveaway for the first 1,500 fans.

The men and women of the armed forces will be honored with an extra group discount on Military Appreciation Night at 6:30 p.m. May 27.

Your favorite “Star Wars” characters will grace the stadium, courtesy of the 501st Legion, on “Star Wars” Night, Friday, June 15. The Boomers will host a special Father's Day game of catch with dads and kids on the field after the game Sunday, June 16. The team will have its ladies' night on Thursday, June 7 with “Wine, Women and Baseball.”

The Boomers will attempt to set a new world record with the World's Largest Squirt Gun Fight on Sunday, July 8 — as well as a designated no-squirt zone.

The Boomers' mascot, Coop, will celebrate his birthday along with other area mascots on Saturday, July 14. Olympics Night, July 27, will feature a Boomers-style opening ceremony for the 2012 London Olympics.

Other important dates include Plumbers Night (June 6), Cancer Survivors Night (June 9), Bike Day (June 16), Hospitality Appreciation Night (June 18), First Responders Night (July 2), Superheroes Night (July 13), “I Appreciate You” Day! (July 25), Bark in the Park (Aug. 15), Prairie Chicken Appreciation Day (Aug. 16), Ditch Work Day (Aug. 22) and Glee Night (Aug. 29).

Nightly promotions will be regularly observed with Fireworks Fridays and Souvenir Saturdays being among the most prominent.

Boomers Family Sundays will feature a postgame autograph session, while Hometown Tuesdays will feature an extra group discount for groups from specific suburbs, including Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Arlington Heights, Wheaton and Elgin.

Kids Days at 11 a.m. on May 29 and 30 allow area teachers and principals to reward a year of hard work with a field trip to the stadium for their students. There also will be similar Day Camp Days at 11 a.m. June 25 and July 18.
