Forte powers Conant
Conant freshman Anthony Forte had a memorable varsity baseball debut Monday afternoon.
Forte homered to help senior Nick Blaha get the victory as Conant won its nonconference season opener 3-2 over Crystal Lake South.
Forte hit a solo homer and Blaha also drove in a run. Kyle Gizynski doubled for the Cougars.
Cary-Grove 2, Schaumburg 0 (9 inn.): Schaumburg had 3 of the 4 hits in its nonconference opener but Cary-Grove finally broke through with 2 runs in the top of the ninth for the victory.
Leyden 3, Riverside-Brookfield 2: Dan Schoedel got the victory and junior Mike Szopinski went 4-for-4 with his second RBI giving Leyden (2-0) the nonconference win in the bottom of the seventh.
Maine South 3, Buffalo Grove 1: Erich Froemming had a second-inning sacrifice fly for Buffalo Grove’s only run as it lost its nonconference opener. Robert Hawkins took the loss as Maine South had only 5 hits but John Forsythe and Keenan Kelly combined on a 2-hitter with 13 strikeouts.
