Learn to be tech-savvy this winter in Schaumburg

A series of five one-day programs at the Schaumburg Park District this winter could turn you from a novice into a tech-savvy photographer and social media guru before the spring thaw arrives.

All five programs will be taught by award-winning Daily Herald photojournalist and technology expert George LeClaire at Bock Neighborhood Center, 1223 W. Sharon Lane in Schaumburg.

Budding photographers will learn how to use a digital camera from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 23. The class will cover camera functions including white balance, programmable shooting modes, lighting, ISO, file format, quality control and one push button settings. No previous photography experience is required. Participants must bring a point-and-shoot or DSLR camera and user manual to class.

“Twitter for Business, Photographers, Parents and Everyone,” set for 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 30, will teach participants how to use the world’s leading microblogging service. The class will include tools, visual demonstrations and detailed notes on how to start a Twitter account for personal and professional use.

Photography enthusiasts will be taught how to take interesting photos using photojournalism techniques from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 6. Participants will develop new skills to go beyond posed photos, freeze action, shoot reaction and make photos look professional. Participants must bring a camera to class.

Photographers can advance their skills by learning how to make a video from photos and other media from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 22. The class will cover how to easily use four different computer programs to mix, edit and add effects to digital content, photographs, video, text and music. Participants also will learn how to create a downloadable video to share on the web.

Want to be the next viral superstar on YouTube? “How to Start a YouTube Channel in 15 Minutes,” set for 7 to 9 p.m. March 14 will teach participants how to create and manage a personal YouTube channel. The class will include how to shoot, send and edit videos for the video-sharing website.

All five programs are designed for ages 14 and up. The cost per program is $25 for Schaumburg Park District residents and $37 for nonresidents. Preregistration is required.
