Maxwell Street Klezmer Band to perform in Arlington Heights

The Northwest Suburban Community Concert Association, in partnership with District 214 Community Education, announced its opening concert of the 2011-2012 Season will feature the local, ever-popular, Maxwell Street Klezmer Band.

The concert will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at Forest View Education Center Theater, 2121 S. Goebbert Road, in Arlington Heights.

Individual tickets will be available at the door. Advanced tickets can be purchased at www.nscommunityconcerts.org or through District 214 at (847) 718-7702. The cost is $25 for adults; children in grades K-12 are free with a paying adult.

Returning to the concert series by popular demand is one of the Midwest’s premier Klezmer Bands. Maxwell Street has been central to the revival of traditional klezmer music for over 25 years. It is one of the true klezmer “Big Bands,” recalling the rich jazzy sounds of the Swing Era. The band’s traditional klezmer music, songs from the Yiddish theater, and original klezmer-traditional compositions are offered with energy and humor.

The Band features both lyrical and haunting melodies of cantors, and boisterous dances of the Russians, Romanians, Poles and other surrounding cultures. Their music creates a multidimensional picture of the lost Jewish cultures of Eastern Europe, spiced with excerpts of America as seen through immigrant eyes.

A truly unique and fun evening of entertainment for all.
