Rolling Meadows handles Huntley

Huntley softball coach Mark Petryniec said he got the call early in the day.

“They (Rolling Meadows officials) told us early in the day that we should be ready to play,” he said. “We knew we were playing. They did a great job getting the field ready.”

The Mustangs were ready, too.

Collecting 13 hits, Meadows was able to leave the field in the bottom of the sixth with a 14-4 triumph.

Freshman Grace Skorin capped off a 4-for-4 day with 6 RBI by drilling a two-out, 2-run single to right that prompted the 10-run rule.

“I was just hoping to get a hit each time,” Skorin said of her big day. “I was having a good hitting day and we all hit well.”

The Mustangs improved to 5-3 after playing the only softball game in the northwest suburbs on Friday.

“Our groundskeeper did a great job of getting the water off the field,” said Rolling Meadows coach Tony Wolanski.

The Mustangs scored 3 runs in the first and 4 in the third to lead 7-0.

The Red Raiders (2-5) fought back to within 7-3 before Meadows pushed across 5 in the bottom of the fifth.

After one out in the fifth, senior Kelly Keyzer and sophomore San Anderson singled to center.

Senior Abby Matayka then drew her third of 4 walks to load the bases.

Sophomore Emily Hattory (3-for-5) reached on a fielder’s choice which allowed Keyzer to cross the plate.

Skorin then delivered a 2-run single to center and three batters later junior Ellie Morgan doubled to right-center to bring home 2 more runs.

“We were hitting the ball real well,” Matayka said. “We just have to work on our defense and eliminate our errors.”

Keyzer also caught for winning pitcher Sara Brunlieb (4-2), who struck out two and walked none.

“We’ve got a tough week coming up with Palatine, Fremd and Conant,” said Keyzer, who went 3-for-3. “We’ve got to pull it together and get a good start in conference.”

The Red Raiders were led on offense by Brittany Koss (2-for-4) and pitcher Taylor Larson (2-for-3, double). Randi Peterson, Angela Tribuzio, Nikki DeMarco, Aryana Burgos and Tara Lycos had the other hits for Huntley.

“They (Rolling Meadows) were ready to play, we were not,” Petryniec said. “We’ve got to get ready now for conference, which starts next week.”

Wolanski expects to have the services of junior Josie Suchecki next week.

“She’s been out for five games with an elbow injury,” Wolanski said. “She has the best swing on our team.”

How about the second best?

“Grace Skorin,” the coach said.

The freshman showed why on Friday.
