Volo Bog announces photo contest winners

Friends of Volo Bog and the Shutterbugs of Volo Bog announced the winners of their 24th Annual Nature Photo Contest.

The winners were announced last month between stories and music sets at Volo Bog State Natural Area’s annual Winterfest. Twenty-six people entered the contest, with a total of 180 entries in eight categories.

Visitors to the natural area’s visitor center from Oct. 30 to Jan. 7 were asked to vote for their favorites in each category and overall.

First-, second- and third-place ribbons were awarded to the top vote-getters in each category, plus first, second and third place Youth Awards for photographers ages 16 and younger.

A plaque was awarded to first place in each category, as well as a Best of Shows/Peoples’ Choice award and a Best of Shows/Judges’ award.

The winners are:

Best of Show/Peoples’ Choice award: Bob Williams of Huntley for “Cardinal in Winter.”

Best of Show/Judges’ award: James Sayre of Libertyville for “Rattlesnake Master Clusters.”

Category winners:

• Color landscape: Joan Sayre of Libertyville, first place for “Dewdrops on Web”; Paul McFadden of Algonquin, second place for “Serenity”; James Sayer of Libertyville, third place for “Reflections in Ice.”

• Color animal invertebrate: James Sayre of Libertyville, first place for “Ebony Jewelwing”; Paul McFadden of Algonquin, second place for “Big Mean Bugger”; Joan Sayre of Libertyville, third place for “Autumn Spider.”

• Color plant: James Sayre of Libertyville, first place for “Rattlesnake Master Clusters” Paul McFadden of Algonquin, second place for “Morning Dew on Wild Plum”; Tom Lowden of Crystal Lake, third place for “Fringed Gentian Bouquet.”

• Black and white: Bob Williams of Huntley, first place for “Reflections”; Paul McFadden of Algonquin, second place for “Knee High to a Young Buck”; Tom Lowden of Crystal Lake, third place for “Winter Oaks.”

• Leave No Child Inside: Bob Williams of Huntley, first place for “Fishing with Grandpa”; Katie Santner of Genoa City, Wis., second place for “Autumn Amusement”; Tom Lowden of Crystal Lake, third place for “After the Hike.”

• Alteration of Reality: Brad Waggoner of Lindenhurst, first place for “Sunshine & Rain”; Paul McFadden of Algonquin, second place for “Doe Skin”; Richard Navarre of Grayslake, third place for “Coneflowers.”

• Color vertebrates: Bob Williams of Huntley, first place for “Cardinal in Winter”; James Sayre of Libertyville, second place for “Angry Cooper’s hawk”; Paul McFadden of Algonquin, third place for “Foxzzzzzs.”

• Beyond the Midwest: Brad Waggoner of Lindenhurst, first place for “Survivor”; James Sayre of Libertyville, second place for “Flamingos”; Brad Waggoner of Lindenhurst, third place for “Bison Crossing.”

• Youth Awards (photographers up to age 16): First place, Katie Santner of Genoa City, Wis., for “Autumn Amusement” and Kaitlyn Ball of Arlington Heights for “Matthiessen State Park Fall”; second place, Katherine Borg of Chicago for “Unfolding”; third place, Sara Pezzella of Lincolnshire for “A Little Buggy.”

The winning photos will be on display at Volo Bog through Sunday, March 6, and available for viewing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday, as staff and volunteers are available. Volo Bog is in Ingleside on Brandenburg Road, off Route 12 between routes 120 and 134.

Volo Bog’s photo contest runs from late October through the Friday preceding Winterfest, which is held the second Sunday in January. Entry forms become available each September.

The Shutterbugs of Volo Bog meets at 7 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month in the Volo Bog Visitor Center.
