BG tips Fremd in badminton showdown

The top two contenders for the Mid-Suburban League badminton title met in a crossover showdown Thursday.

And visiting Buffalo Grove took four of the six three-set matches to edge the defending state champion Vikings 8-7.

BG's defending state doubles champions Heather and Ashton Nisbet came back for a 17-21, 21-13, 21-14 win over Alice Liu and Annie Huang at No. 1. Heather Nisbet beat Fremd's Erica Lee, who was third at state singles last year, 21-18, 12-21, 21-12 at No. 1 and Ashton Nisbet beat Annie Huang at No. 2 singles.

BG also got two three-set doubles wins from Michelle Byjos and Nell Boyd at No. 2 and Kelsey Kob and Molly Jackson at No. 4. Boyd, Kob and Jane Seo had singles wins for the Bison.

Fremd got three-set wins from Katie Morton and Shannon Fitzgerald at No. 5 doubles and Jackie Tiangco at No. 4 singles. Lee and Carlita Shen won at No. 3 doubles and Alice Liu, Steph Kim, Morton and Shen also had singles victories.

The MSL badminton tournament will be next weekend at Elk Grove with doubles Friday and singles Saturday.

Boys gymnasticsBuffalo Grove (141.35) edged Prospect (141.0) for the title in the seven-team District 214 Invitational.Erik Balko won the vault (9.4) and Kyle Chamberlain took the floor exercise (9.4) for BG. Prospect's Jim Brault won the horizontal bar (9.3) and was third in the all-around.Rolling Meadows was third as John Scallon won the pommel horse with 9.8. Marc Herff won the parallel bars (9.35) and was second in the all-around.
