Fox Valley scholarships

MCCD: With the financial support of Smith Engineering Consultants Inc., McHenry County Conservation District is accepting applications for a $500 scholarship to be awarded to a college or university undergraduate student in a field of conservation studies.

Applicants must currently be enrolled in an undergraduate program in the area of conservation. This includes, but is not limited to, biology, parks and recreation, forestry, environmental education, environmental design or landscape architecture.

Those interested should send a 500-word essay explaining their goals of contribution to conservation, postmarked by Friday, Jan. 22. The scholarship winner will be announced Thursday, Feb. 18, at the board of trustees meeting.

Conservation Foundation: The Conservation Foundation's Environmental Scholarship Fund was established in 2007. Applicants must have demonstrated a strong commitment to the preservation of the environment through their work-related, volunteer or other community activities. A paid summer internship may be available for the winner of this scholarship at the Kendall County Forest Preserve.

This scholarship was established by Ron Yenerich, a member of The Conservation Foundation's Advisory Council. This scholarship is available to students residing in The Conservation Foundation's service area of DuPage, Kane, Kendall and Will counties who are or will be upper classmen attending an accredited two-year college, or a four-year accredited college or university. Historic Administration Scholarship Fund: Garfield Farm Museum has announced the third annual $2,000 scholarship for graduate studies in museum administration. Applications must be made in January 2010. This annual scholarship is focused on students at the master's level or higher, pursuing degrees in historic administration, public history, museum administration or related fields of study who preferably have demonstrated a strong commitment to the preservation of historic sites through their studies, work experience, volunteer or other activities. Potential applicants from the southern half of Kane and Kendall counties enrolled at an accredited college or university are encouraged to inquire of the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley by calling (630) 896-7800 or visit CommunityFoundationFRV.org.

Outstanding candidates who live in proximity to the Fox Valley in Will, DuPage or northern Kane County, also will be given due consideration. The successful candidate also will be given special consideration if she or he later applies for Garfield Farm Museum's Graduate Student Internship Program. The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley handles all the administration of the scholarship funds and applications. Waubonsee scholarships: The Waubonsee Community College Foundation is offering more than 100 scholarships for the 2010-2011 academic year. The application deadline is Thursday, Feb. 4. Scholarships are available to both new and returning Waubonsee students. Details and application forms can be found online at www.waubonsee.edu/scholarships. Zonta Club: The Zonta Club of St. Charles-Geneva-Batavia, a professional women's service organization, is offering scholarships to local area women to continue their education. There are four scholarships being offered.

One scholarship is for young women graduating high school in June 2010. The Luella Hoffman Scholarship is given annually to a public or private school student in districts U-46, 101 or 301 through 304. This award which ranges from $1,500-$2,500 is to be applied to tuition, books and fees for a full-time two- or four-year program of study. Selection is based on academic performance, community service, extracurricular activities, financial need, and the applicant's expressed objectives and goals.

Two scholarships are for women currently in college or looking to re-enter. The 2nd Chance Scholarship is designed to help a woman 25 or older who desires to continue her education on a full or part-time basis at any institution of higher learning in Kane or adjacent counties. This $500/semester award is based on sincerity of purpose, financial need and academic aptitude.

The Jane Klausman Women in Business Scholarship is for any woman entering her third or fourth year of an undergraduate degree program in a business-related field. The award of $500 is based on outstanding academic achievement in business-related subjects and future academic and career goals. There is also a district competition for $400 paid in September with the district winner competing for a $4000 award from Zonta International paid in December.

A significant portion of the proceeds from the Zonta Club's annual Dinner and Auction held the first Tuesday in November is used to support these scholarship opportunities for local women. The Zonta Silent Auction has received wide support from local businesses and the community in recognition of the club's efforts to improve the lives of women both locally and internationally. Generous Zonta supporters EFS Foundation, Morgan Stanley, and Trust Company of Illinois contribute to these scholarship opportunities.

Applications for scholarships must be submitted no later than Feb. 25. Awards are made in April for the fall 2010 school year. Applications are available online at zontawest-sgb.org. Odd Fellow Lodge: Noble Grand Jim Turner of the Odd Fellow Elgin Lodge 12 and Judy Wilson of Samaritan Rebekah Lodge 120 recently announced that the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, one of the world's oldest fraternal organizations, has funds available for several scholarship awards during the 2010-11 school year for students who are residents of Illinois and citizens of the United States.

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of financial need and scholastic ability. Students with a grade-point average of "C" or above and planning to attend an accredited college or trade school will be considered. Students interested may obtain a scholarship application by visiting ioof-il.org.

Township scholarship: St. Charles Township is announcing the Township Officials of Illinois scholarship program for graduating high school seniors planning to attend an Illinois college or university in the fall of 2010.

The program sponsored by the state association, TOI, is for deserving Illinois students that have demonstrated a willingness to accept leadership responsibilities and serve their respective communities. TOI will award seven $2,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who will attend Illinois colleges or universities this fall. Applications as well as eligibility criteria may be obtained at the TOI Web site, toi.org, or by contacting TOI at (217) 744-2212 or their toll-free number (866) 897-4688. To make arrangements for an interview with a township official as required for your application, call St. Charles Township at (630) 584-9342. Deadline for applications is March 1.

"This program gives Illinois students the opportunity to learn more about the government closest to the people, township government, as well as a financial boost," says Ron Johnson, Highway Commissioner.

The Township Officials of Illinois is a private, nonprofit organization that currently represents 99 percent of the state's 1,433 townships. It has maintained a scholarship program since 1982.

FIAMC: Faith in Action of McHenry County, a senior services organization, is sponsoring its first scholarship for those students currently enrolled in the McHenry County College program MCC Promise. MCC Promise provides reimbursement of college tuition for students in exchange for volunteering hours with a McHenry County nonprofit organization, such as FIAMC.

A generous donation from the Rotary Club of Crystal Lake Dawnbreakers makes this scholarship possible. Two awards will be made: $1,000 will go to the winner and $500 to the runner-up.

Criteria for the scholarship is as follows: reside in McHenry County; be an MCC promise student in good standing with a minimum 2.5 grade-point average; be enrolled and accepted at a fully accredited college or tech school with the intent of completing the next step of your education (i.e. bachelor of arts/bachelor of science or an advanced tech leading to a certification); completed three semesters of community service under the direction of Faith in Action; submit a letter of recommendation from a college professor; and submit biographical information and a 500-word essay, if requested, appear before a scholarship selection board.

Applications for the scholarships are due March 1.

FIAMC began on Nov. 1, 1998 with receipt of $25,000 from the Robert S. Wood Johnson Foundation to establish an Interfaith Volunteer Caregiver Program for the elderly in McHenry County utilizing guidelines from the national Faith in Action program. It began under the umbrella of Family Services and became a stand-alone nonprofit organization in 2000.

It currently utilizes approximately 350 volunteers from faith congregations and the community at large to provide services to care recipients, 60 years of age and older, living in their own home, apartment, or with a family member in McHenry County. Such services include friendly home visits and phone calls, shopping and errands, home maintenance and repairs, light yard work, light household chores, respite services and daily assurance calls.

General Assembly Scholarship: College students residing in the 64th legislative district are invited to pick up a General Assembly Scholarship application from state Rep. Michael Tryon's district office. The General Assembly Scholarship program awards eight one-year, tuition-only scholarships to the University of Illinois or any other public university in the state, and is judged by a scholarship committee, according to Rep. Tryon (R-Crystal Lake).

To qualify for the General Assembly Scholarship, students must: be enrolled in a degree-granting program for the 2010 fall and 2011 spring semesters; be a resident of the 64th legislative district; show evidence of good grades and leadership potential as demonstrated through extracurricular activities; and be planning to continue his or her education within the Illinois state university system. Applications can also be printed off www.michaeltryon.com. The deadline is March 26 at 5 p.m. Applications must be submitted to Rep. Tryon's district office at 1 N. Virginia St. in Crystal Lake.
