Woods & Wetlands series visits the Cahokia Mounds

Woods and Wetlands, the Sierra Club organization for Lake County, has announced their Speaker Series event for 7 p.m. Sunday, April 16.

Did you know that the oldest prehistoric settlement in North America is just about a five-hour drive southwest of Lake County? The Cahokia Mounds near Collinsville represent the largest cultural, religious, and economic center of the Mississipian culture.

Cahokia, a Native American city, once had a population that rivaled London. Bill Iseminger, anthropologist, archaeologist and author, will review many significant features of this UNESCO World Heritage site. Iseminger will cover the history of Cahokia and current archaeological research.

To register for the family-friendly Sunday Speaker Series and receive the Zoom address, visit www.sierraclub.org/illinois/woods-wetlands.

This presentation will cover the previous cultural traditions and the rise and demise of Cahokia, the largest prehistoric settlement north of Mexico about 1,000 years ago, and a review of the many significant site features and results of past and current archaeological research.
