Illinois 4-H to host Green Trees Planting Project April 2 in Naperville

Did you know that Illinois once had 14 million acres of trees, but that number has dropped to 5 million due to modern development practices?

Illinois 4-H is partnering with Illinois Soil and Water Conservation Districts to help turn the tide by planting more than 900 oak trees in 38 counties across Illinois this spring.

4-H families and community members are invited to join the Green Trees Planting Project from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 2, at Boundary Hill Woods, 651 Boundary Hill Road, Naperville.

Participants should bring tools, such as hand shovels, trowels and gloves.

Register at tinyurl.com/36nu4pbc.

Participants will be planting fire-resistant, native oak species in public spaces where the community can enjoy the benefits. These 25-tree savannas will help rebuild our native ecosystems, three-quarters of an acre at a time.

For more information, contact Contact Nancy Reppe, 4-H program coordinator, at nslep2@illinois.edu or (630) 955-1123, ext. 18.

An adult parent or guardian will need to be present for youth under 16. All participants must complete the Woodridge Park District volunteer form.

Wear close-toed shoes and dress appropriate for the weather and for getting dirty!

In case of inclement weather, any changes would be emailed by 10 a.m. that day.
