Wheeling Township can help with home heating bills

Wheeling Township residents who are having difficulty affording gas or electric bills can still apply for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program). This assistance program opened in the fall of 2022, so only residents who have not yet applied are eligible. Applications will be open through May of this year, or until the funding is exhausted.

"As a township, we are always concerned for the well-being of our residents, but especially for those who continue to struggle with ongoing financial challenges," said Wheeling Township Supervisor Kathleen Penner. "The LIHEAP program helps to ensure that qualified residents are able to afford their heating bills."

LIHEAP is designed to assist income-eligible households with paying energy bills in the form of a one-time benefit payment to their utility company. The payment amount is determined by income, household size, and fuel type. Reconnection assistance is also available for disconnected households.

Those interested in applying must provide documentation, including: A current photo ID, Social Security cards for everyone living in the household, current utility bills and all sources of household income over the last 30 days. Additional documentation may also be requested.

Income guidelines for 2022-2023 LIHEAP applications are as follows:

Household size/gross income for 30 days prior to application:

• One/$2,265

• Two/$3,052

• Three/$3,838

• Four/$4,625

• Five/$5,412

• Six/$6,198

Residents who meet this income criteria should call the township's General Assistance Department to schedule an appointment at (847) 259-7730. Appointments will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.
