Huntley Rotary working toward a polio-free world

Huntley Village President Timothy Hoeft recently signed a World Polio Day proclamation for the Rotary Club of Huntley.

Mayor Hoeft declared Oct. 24 as World Polio Day in Huntley, reminding all of us that the polio virus is almost gone but still in the world.

Pakistan and Afghanistan are the last two countries that are still not polio free.

This year, a case was discovered in upstate New York, so polio can return if we are not diligent.

Rotary International launched Polio Plus in 1988 and helped establish the Global Polio Eradication initiative, which includes the World Health Organization, U.S. Centers for Disease Control, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to immunize the children of the world against polio.

You can help the Rotary Club raise more dollars by visiting HuntleyRotary.org and clicking on the "Donate" and selecting "End Polio Now."

Until it is gone everywhere, it is only a plane ride away.
