Scholars gather at conference to interpret scripture

For 46 years, the Summer Scripture Conference at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary has brought together curious minds from across the country for presentations on various aspects of the Bible and faith.

This year's conference - Interpreting Scripture Through the Church - will be offered online and in-person on the university campus June 19-24. Take advantage of staying at the campus for this weeklong series that offers presentations, opportunities for prayer, and a retreat-like atmosphere to contemplate this year's focus on how to interpret sacred scripture.

The conference's faculty speaker lineup features top biblical scholars and theologians from across the country include:

• Father Donald Senior, C.P., president emeritus, chancellor and professor, Catholic Theological Union, Chicago will present "The Arduous Trail from Leo XIII to Divino Afflante Spiritu"; "From Dei Verbum to Verbum Domini: the Transformation of Catholic Perspectives on Interpretation of the Bible"; and "Some Rules for the Road: Catholic Perspective on Interpreting the Bible."

• Timothy Milinovich, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of theology, Dominican University, River Forest, will discuss "The Bible and the Catholic Church: It's Complicated"; "Protestants, Catholics, and the Bible: Different Approaches and Perspectives"; and "The Bible and Politics in America Today."

• Kathleen Gallagher Elkins, Ph.D., associate professor of theology and religious studies, St. Norbert College, De Pere, Wisconsin, will talk about "Reading the Bible with Children in Mind: What Do We Do with a Bible that Harms Children?"; "Model of Faithfulness or Abusive Father? Abraham and His Sons in Genesis 16-22"; and "Children in Revelation and at the End: Revelation 2, 19; Mark 13."

• Mark Giszczak, Ph.D., associate professor of sacred scripture, Augustine Institute, Greenwood Village, Colorado, will present "The Headwaters of Christian Prayer: Messianic Hope in the Shape of the Psalter"; "The Book of Wisdom as Model for Christian Reception of the Old Testament"; and "Sirach 44-50 and Hebrews 11: The Halls of Heroes and the Cloud of Witnesses."

• Peter Williamson, S.T.D. Adam Cardinal Maida Chair of Sacred Scripture, Sacred Heart Major Seminary, Detroit, Michigan, will discuss "What Does the Catholic Church Believe about the Bible and What Are the Implications for Interpretation?"; "Principles of Catholic Biblical Interpretation"; and "Interpreting Scripture for the Life and Mission of the Church - the Ministry of the Word."

Mundelein Seminary, located on the campus of the University of St. Mary of the Lake, is the major seminary and graduate school of theology for the formation of priests in the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Led by Cardinal Blase J. Cupich as chancellor and Father John Kartje as rector, Mundelein Seminary educates nearly 200 seminarians from 34 dioceses across the country and around the world.

It is the oldest university in the Chicago area and is composed of six schools and institutes, all devoted to ministry formation. It serves approximately 1,000 students through its degree and certificate programs.
