Sorority's Nu Omega Chapter awards scholarships

Lake County-based Lambda Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. has announced the 2022 scholarship award recipients.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Lambda Nu Omega Chapter awards scholarships to students in the Lake County area based on their leadership skills, participation in service organizations, clubs, and other student groups at school and the community, and their academic record.

The 2022 scholarship recipients were announced at Lambda Nu Omega's Virtual Spring Fashion Show/Annual Scholarship Fundraiser on May 7.

Lambda Nu Omega awarded the Isabel Buckner Leadership Legacy Award to Kennedy Brothers of New Tech at Zion Benton East. Isabel Buckner was a charter member of the Lambda Nu Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Buckner was also the city of Waukegan's first African-American female principal and served as principal at Carman Elementary School for many years. The school was renamed Carman-Buckner in her honor.

Lambda Nu Omega awarded Academic Excellence Awards to Mayra Castaneda Avilez (Round Lake Senior High School), Unique Carcamo (North Chicago Community High School), Garrison Carter (Wauconda High School), Ashley Darling (Warren Township High School), Riley McAllister (Zion-Benton Township High School), and Sanaii Williams (North Chicago Community High School).

For more than 40 years, Lambda Nu Omega has awarded over $180,000 in scholarships to high school seniors in the Lake County area to further their education.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. is the first intercollegiate historically African-American sorority. Since its founding in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. has devoted exceptional measures toward scholarship and service to all mankind.

Lambda Nu Omega chapter was distinguished as the first African-American Sorority chapter in Lake County upon its charter on May 27, 1977, at the Waukegan Public Library. Today, Lambda Nu Omega Chapter has over 90 active members. It continues to serve the entrepreneurial, economic, social, physical, and mental health needs of the underserved people within Lake County.
