First Methodist Church Des Plaines plans 150th anniversary celebration

2021 marks the 150th year that First United Methodist Church has been a vibrant part of Des Plaines.

On the weekend of Sept. 25-26, First United Methodist Church will recall its past and celebrate the future as a congregation dedicated to reaching beyond the church walls.

Saturday, Sept. 25, kicks off with renewed community outreach. Interesting, fun service opportunities for all ages are being planned and the community is invited to participate.

Sunday, Sept. 26, will be a celebration of First Church in this community. Join at 10 a.m. for a morning worship service, followed by a catered lunch. There will be special music, fellowship and a presentation by the Des Plaines Historical Society.

"Go. Do. Good. Empowered by the Spirit, Demonstrating God's Love, Spreading the Good News of Christ" is First United Methodist Church's theme. Making a difference in the community is its goal.

Community outreach is not new for this congregation. Serving a free home-cooked meal every Monday to anyone who comes and filling backpacks with food for the weekend, which then are taken to local schools for distribution, are just some examples of the congregation's community involvement.

Your suggestions for future service projects in Des Plaines would be welcome.
