Students get peek at optometry program at Midwestern University
Midwestern University's Chicago College of Optometry held its third annual Summer Eye Experience program on the Downers Grove campus for 30 college students and recent graduates interested in pursuing a career in optometry. Students representing 14 different states attended the three-day program that took place in June.
"The SEE at CCO program was specifically designed for those interested in pursuing a future in optometry. Through various interactive sessions, students gained insight into the optometric profession, including the application process, life as an optometry student, and the various career options that optometry has to offer," said John Gialousakis, O.D., FAAO, Director of Curriculum Development and Chair of the Admissions Committee at the Chicago College of Optometry.
While on the Downers Grove campus, the program participants benefitted from small group seminars, interacted with students and clinical faculty at the Midwestern University Eye Institute, and enjoyed hands-on educational experiences. Students also attended workshops about interviewing techniques, study skills, and preparing for the Optometry Admission Test.
"I feel that with this experience, I am more confident about applying to optometry schools because I've had a taste of what it would be like. Yesterday, we had an ocular anatomy class, and the professor was amazing. I feel this experience will make my application stand out," said Afia Nasir, a recent graduate from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Noelle Toups, who traveled from Louisiana, agreed, "This program definitely solidified my decision to apply to optometry school and prepared me for the interview process," she said.
Other participants noted that they appreciated learning about the diverse opportunities available to optometry graduates. "I really enjoyed learning so much about all the specialties that are available. There's so much more to optometry than just primary care," said Gabby Malave, a current student at Indiana University, Bloomington. "I also loved the hands-on experiences with the different specialty professors and getting to use the amazing technology that's offered at CCO," she added.
As one of the nation's newest colleges of optometry, Midwestern's Chicago College of Optometry is fully accredited and has developed a curriculum to meet the needs of today's practice environment. Students enrolled in the program earn a Doctor of Optometry degree and benefit from small class sizes and faculty mentors who are dedicated to their success in the growing field of optometry.
