Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition is hosting a Native Garden Tour on Saturday, July 24, to encourage homeowners to re-wild and restore their own property with native plants, shrubs and trees.

Native plants help: increase biodiversity and ecosystems; beautify landscapes; provide stormwater solutions; reduce overall maintenance; and more.

Take a self-guided free tour featuring three public and three private gardens in Elmhurst between 9 a.m. and noon.

Tour participants can visit some or all of the native gardens on their own and at their own pace, or join the Elmhurst Bicycle Club on a safe bike route to all six gardens. Bike helmets are required.

Each garden features a knowledgeable host who is available to share information about the garden, individual plants, garden features, and additional resources to help attendees start their own native gardens.

The Native Garden Tour is the first of many educational programs and events revolving around "Start In Your Yard," including a "One Book, One Community" read of Doug Tallamy's "Nature's Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation That Starts In Your Yard" in partnership with the Elmhurst Public Library, and an author visit sponsored by Friends of the Library.

Tallamy urges homeowners to take environmental action into their own hands, one yard at a time, to restore critical ecosystems.

Register to receive the tour route emailed to attendees starting on July 21 at nativegardentour.eventbrite.com.
