Hoffman dance company shines bright at competition

Hoffman Estates Park District's Hoffman Stars Dance Company recently took home many awards at the regional Dance Idol Competition in Des Plaines, including first place for the Senior Company's jazz routine.

"This has been a challenging year, but our dancers and teachers worked very hard in preparation for this competition. It takes a lot of practice, time and dedication to be competition-ready, but they were up to the challenge," said Jessica Karbowski, dance coordinator at Hoffman Estates Park District.

Hoffman Stars Dance Company participates in one small group competition. Company 2, ages 11-12, received a silver and won the "Workin' It" judges' award. Company 2 members included Andrea Avilan, Sophia Berichon, Briana Dawson, Cailin Hopkins and Jasmine Reyes.

Company 1 dancers Kylie Hopkins, Victoria Kersting and Lily Shure performed a dance trio and received sixth place in their category. The Company 1 trio also received the judges' "Dream Girls Award."

Competing in the 16-19 age bracket, Senior Company took first for their jazz trio, "Wanna Be Larger Than Life." Senior Company dancers Cami Colaprete, Abby Knapp and Natalie McHone also performed a contemporary trio called "Powerful" and won the "Dynamic Trio" judges' award.

Hoffman Stars Dance Company competed in the Luminary level, which requires one to three hours of dance or rehearsal practice each week.

"The competition was really tough this year. We are proud of how our students represented the community and the park district," Karbowski said. "Our dance instructors, Kelsey Nebl and Missy Baxter, choreographed amazing dances and really inspired our students to succeed."

Hoffman Estates Park District offers dance instruction for ages 3 years to adult and competition dance for ages 5-18 years. Tryouts for Hoffman Stars Dance Company will be in mid-August at Triphahn Center and Ice Arena, in Hoffman Estates.
